The South Korean focus is to an increasing degree on the development of high-tech industries. This includes areas such as e.g. material science, bioengineering, microelectronics, fine chemistry, aerospace, and mechatronics (including industrial robotics). These knowledge intensive domains have typically been associated with industries in Western countries. Interesting questions therefore spring to mind on how the South Korean approach to growth will influence the development of competences in these new knowledge intensive areas.
